Union Buildings, South Africa
The Union Building is the seat of the South African Government. Below the buildings are formal gardens and a giant statue of Nelson Mandela. The gardens have become a popular attraction, with dozens of people visiting each day to take photos of themselves at the statue and have picnics on the lawns. Some (mainly South Africa's Ethiopian community) have their weddings on the grounds. To me the Mandela statue and activity around it represents a celebration of our democracy.

Constitution Hill
Constitution Hill houses the Constitutional Court, South Africa’s highest court. Constitution Hill has in the past been the site of several jails were political prisoners were incarcerated as well as other prisoners. These jails are: The Old Fort, Number Four jail and the Women’s Jail. These have now been turned into museums and exhibition spaces, the Women’s jail now houses the Commission for Gender Equality.
