Transition to Democracy
After a long and hard fought struggle against Apartheid, the African National Congress (ANC) was unbanned on the 2nd February 1990. A few days later on 11th February 1990, Nelson Mandela was released from prison. A year later, on the 24th April 1991, I was able to return to South Africa after having spent 12 years in political exile.  I was granted Indemnity from prosecution for having left the country illegally and joining  the ANC. These are some of the images that I took after my return to South Africa in the build-up to South Africa’s first democratic election in 1994.
Liberia: Goodbye Charles Taylor
On the 11 August  2003, the former Liberian president and convicted war criminal, Charles Taylor, stepped down from power and left Liberia. One of the conditions for his resignation was that he be secured safe passage to leave the country. These are photos taken at the airport in Monrovia as Taylor left the Country after the inauguration of Moses Blah as his successor. A week later the Accra Comprehensive Peace Agreement was signed marking the end to Liberia’s Second Civil War.
